Who Made the First American Flag?

Historians cannot confirm it with complete certainty, but most attribute Betsy Ross with making the first American flag, according to History.com. According to the story, Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress, was approached by General George Washington, Robert Morris and George Ross with the design of the flag to sew.

Betsy Ross agreed to make the flag, but she proposed a couple of changes to the design. Historians also believe that Francis Hopkinson was the man who originally designed the flag, because in 1780 he sought payment for his design of the flag from the Board of Admiralty. There are stories and legends to work from, but in many ways, the origin of the US flag is a mystery.
