Byron De La Beckwith killed Medgar Evers, in Jackson, Miss. When he died in 1963, Evers was the Mississippi field secretary for the NAACP. Beckwith was convicted of killing Evers, over 30 years later, in 1994. He only served 7 years of his life sentence, before he died in 2001.
Megar Evers fought in World War II from 1943 to 194; and, he was given an honorable discharge following the war, with the rank of sergeant. In 1952, Evers graduated from Alcorn College, which is now known as Alcorn State. He then applied to the University of Mississippi Law School in 1954, as part of an NAACP test case, but was rejected, due to the school being segregated at that time.
