The Iroquois have many symbols including turtles, the tree symbol that alludes to the Great Tree of Peace, the eagle and a cluster of arrows. The turtle is the symbol of one of the Iroquois clans.
The story behind the turtle symbol is that out of the Sky World fell a Sky Woman who landed on a turtle's back. From here, the woman walked around and packed the dirt of the earth, which grew on the back of the turtle to create the continent of North America.
The eagle was used as a symbol for the Iroquois Confederacy since the Iroquois believed the eagle to be sacred. The Great Tree of Peace was used on the Iroquois Confederacy flag and symbolized former Indian enemies coming together and burying all weapons beneath the tree.
