Zuckerberg was a second-year Harvard student when he designed the Facemash website in 2003 and laid the foundation for the 2004 Thefacebook website that became Facebook. Thefacebook membership was initially restricted to Harvard students, but the development team expanded it to include additional colleges and universities. The company changed its name to Facebook in 2005 after buying the facebook.com domain name for $200,000.
