Native Americans, often referred to as Indians, live in most states of the United States and in Canada. Some of the areas with large Native American populations include Alaska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Montana.
As of 2012, up to 70 percent of the Native Americans in the United States live in urban areas, with up to 78 percent of them living outside a reservation. Some of the urban areas with large Native American populations include Denver, Minneapolis, Tucson, Chicago, Houston, Oklahoma City, New York City and Phoenix. As of 2006, approximately 0.8 percent of the total U.S. population was of Native American descent.
