Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams and many other United States founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The purpose of this document was to declare the 13 North American colonies separate from the British Crown that had ruled over them. The document also proposed the equality of human persons and the source of political power within the governed.

The Civil War took place between 1861 and 1865 under the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Two major (and interrelated) issues behind the war were the enslavement of African Americans and the rights of states against the federal government. The South had declared its independence from the North and sought to form its own confederacy. The North eventually won the war and maintained the unity of the United States.

On September 11, 2001, terrorists connected to Al-Qaeda launched several attacks on the United States via hijacking and crashing commercial airliners into several prominent U.S. targets, including the two World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. The attacks led to a U.S. invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of a lengthy "War on Terror" that would eventually involve countries from around the globe.
