In order from left to right, the four American president faces on Mount Rushmore are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The original design of Mount Rushmore called for the representation of these past presidents from the waist up, but funding difficulties limited the work.
Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, chose George Washington and Abraham Lincoln for their overall popularity. Later, he selected Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt for their contributions to American democracy and the expansion of the United States. Each of the carved heads is 60 feet tall. Many refer to visages on Mount Rushmore as the Shrine of Democracy.
