The most famous leader of the Confederate military was Robert Edward Lee, who began to command the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia on June 1, 1862. He became commander-in-chief of all Confederate forces on Jan. 31, 1865, soon surrendering to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on Mar. 29, 1865.

General Thomas Jonathan Jackson, known as Stonewall Jackson, was responsible for victory during the First Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Harpers Ferry. He died during the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863. Samuel Cooper, Joseph E. Johnston and Nathan Bedford Forrest, who later founded the Ku Klux Klan, were also leaders of the Confederate military.
