Some of the most famous explorers include Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama, Leif Eriksson, Amerigo Vespucci, John White, John Smith, Ernest Shackleton, Giovanni da Verrazzano, Christopher Columbus, Lewis and Clark, Frances Drake, Sir Edmund Hillary and Neil Armstrong. Other famous explorers include Hernando de Soto, John Cabot, Jacques Cartier and Jacques Cousteau.
Lewis and Clark are famous explorers because they spent 3 years covering more than 8,000 miles of American soil across the Ohio River, Missouri River and to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis was not only an explorer but also worked as a scientist on the trip and kept detailed notes about the plants, animals, land and people that he encountered. As their Indian guide, Sacagawea accompanied the two and acted as an interpreter on the journey.
Another famous explorer is Neil Armstrong. Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon and therefore was one of the first people to explore the moon on foot. He was responsible for landing a craft from the rocket on the moon as well. Armstrong received many honors for his space exploration work, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Explorers Club Medal and the Royal Geographic Society's Gold Medal.
