While Sir Francis Drake was married twice, he did not have any children with either of his wives. His first wife, Mary Newman, died in 1583 after 12 years of marriage. Sir Francis Drake married his second wife, Elizabeth Syndenham in 1585.
His second wife came from an influential family, which was in sharp contrast to Drake's more ordinary family background. Sir Francis Drake first went to sea when aged 12 or 13 as an apprentice of a small trading ship. Between 1577 and 1580, Sir Francis Drake led an expedition that sailed around the globe while plundering and raiding Spanish ships and settlements.
