Carter went to school in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, and also attended Georgia Southwestern College and Georgia Institute of Technology. He served as a lieutenant in the army and was involved in a nuclear submarine program. He resigned after the death of his father in 1953. He was involved in the family peanut-farming business before serving two terms in the Georgia Senate and a term as the state's governor. He was elected as the U.S president in 1977. During his administration, he made efforts to bring Israel and Egypt together at Camp David.
