Clarissa Harlowe Barton, known as Clara, went to a variety of local schools and received some education from her siblings. After finishing her primary education and taking a job as a teacher, she spent a year at the Clinton Liberal Institute in New York.

In 1851, while visiting a friend, Barton resumed teaching and a year later established Bordentown, New Jersey's first free public school. She stopped teaching in 1854 and began working for the United States government as a patent recording clerk until Secretary of the Interior Robert McClelland, who disbelieved in the ability of women to hold jobs, demoted her to a copyist.
