The Revolutionary War pitted the North American colonies against Great Britain. The colonies rebelled following imposition of taxes and failure to give each American the right to full citizenship by the British Parliament.
The 13 colonies declared themselves independent in 1776 and were named the United States of America. The Revolutionary War started in April of 1775 and went on through to April of 1783 with the U.S. securing its freedom and ending the first British Empire. The major financiers of the revolutionaries were France, the Dutch republic and Spain. It is because of their involvement that Britain eventually declared war on the three countries.
