Barack Hussein Obama, the 44th president of the United States, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Aug. 4, 1961. His mother. Ann Dunham, came from Kansas, and his father, also named Barack Hussein Obama, was from Kenya.
Obama's parents separated when he was 2 years old. After marrying an Indonesian man, Dunham moved with her son to Jakarta in the late 1960s. Obama moved back to Hawaii in 1970, where he lived with his maternal grandparents.
After graduating from the Punahou School in Honolulu, Obama attended Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years. He then transferred to Columbia University, where he earned a political science degree in 1983. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991.
