How Are Ancient and Modern Civilizations Similar?
Ancient and modern civilizations are similar in that they both have a division of labor, social classes, an administrative system, a written language, architecture and art styles and large population centers, such as cities and towns. In fact, all civilizations, regardless of when they were established, must have these characteristics in order to be considered civilizations.
According to National Geographic, every civilization, no matter how ancient or modern, shares a specific set of characteristics. For instance, a civilization must have large population centers or urban areas, such as cities and towns, because it aids in the development of that civilization. Civilizations also have distinctive art and architecture because it is a way to create and preserve a legacy. An example of this is the pyramids and hieroglyphics of the ancient Egyptians.
Having a written language allows civilizations to record their history for posterity. Civilizations also need a way to administer or rule their territories. Ancient Rome is a prime example of this. The Romans built roads and aqueducts so the people and civilization could flourish. Civilizations also have division of labor and social classes. This means that people perform specialized tasks, and these specialized tasks divide the people into social classes.
