Was the American Civil War Inevitable?

In some ways, it seems inevitable that the Civil War would happen because of the rising tensions between the North and the South. It is impossible to know for sure whether or not the American Civil War was inevitable and the topic is debated at length among scholars. It also seems possible that compromises could have been made in areas that might have allowed for a resolution.

President Abraham Lincoln believed that the Civil War was inevitable and the only way to solve the problem between the two groups. The Southerners were fighting for their ability to rule their states independently of the federal government while the Northerners were fighting for the rights of slaves and essentially the right for the federal government to overrule individual state legal decisions.
