Al and Tipper Gore first met at his Senior Prom in 1965. They married in the Washington National Cathedral on May 19, 1970. In 2010, they announced their intent to divorce. They agreed publicly that the separation was amicable. As of January 2015, they are not divorced but are separated.

Al Gore, III is the youngest child of Al and Tipper Gore. He is also their only son. In 2003, while attending Harvard University, Al Gore III was arrested for marijuana possession. He settled that case by completing substance abuse counseling. In 2007, after pleading guilty to drug possession charges, he entered a drug diversion program in Malibu, California.

The Gores' have three daughters named Karenna, Kristin and Sarah.
