Lincoln was in a private box at Ford's Theatre with his wife and friends, where they were seeing the comedy "My American Cousin," when actor Booth, a Confederate loyalist, shot Licoln in the back of the head at 10:15 p.m. Booth escaped by jumping to the stage and fleeing on a broken leg, shouting "Sic semper tyrannis!"
