The 44th president of the United States is Barack Obama. As of 2014, he is in the third year of his second term of office. Obama was elected the Democratic party candidate in 2008, beating Hillary Clinton. He defeated Republican contender John McCain with 53 percent of the popular vote.
Obama was re-elected in 2012, beating Republican candidate Mitt Romney with 51 percent of the popular vote and 61 percent of the electoral votes. Prior to his election as president, Obama served three years as a U.S. senator from Illinois. He was also an Illinois state senator from 1997 to 2004.
