How Many Planes Hit the Twin Towers?

Two hijacked planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. American Airlines Flight 11 flew into the north tower at 8:45 a.m. United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the south tower at 9:03 a.m.

Both of the jets had recently left Logan International Airport in Boston en route to Los Angeles. The American Airlines jet carried 81 passengers and 11 crew members, and the United Airlines jet had a total of 65 passengers and crew aboard. Both planes had over 9,000 gallons of fuel in their tanks. The first jet hit the north tower at around the 80th floor level, and the second hit the south tower at around the level of the 60th floor. At 9:59 a.m. the south tower collapsed. The north tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m.
