Fiji is located in the South Pacific Ocean, about 1,700 miles east of Australia, 1,300 miles north of New Zealand and 3,100 miles south of Hawaii. Its geographic coordinates are 18 00 S, 175 00 E. Fiji is an archipelago of more than 300 islands, but only about 110 of the islands have permanent human habitation.
Fiji is one of many island nations in Melanesia. Its nearest neighbors include Tuvalu to the north, Wallis and Futuna and the Samoan Islands to the northeast, Tonga to the east, the Kermadec Islands to the southeast, New Caledonia to the southwest and Vanuatu to the west.
