Synthetic human urine is often used for the purpose of defeating drug tests, according to the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. Synthetic urine is also used for calibration of laboratory equipment and as part of pranks and sexual fetish practices, explains XStream Novelty World Products.
The use of synthetic urine can be difficult to detect in standard drug tests unless the laboratory looks for specific substances usually found in human urine but not commonly included in synthetic urine, notes the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. However, using synthetic urine to defeat a federally mandated drug test may be considered fraud against the government, states the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. An Ohio man was sentenced to a $7,500 fine and five years probation in July 2015 for selling synthetic urine on the Internet intended to defeat drug tests.
