Studies also suggest that whey protein can have a positive effect on people who battle depression, immune system weakness, gastrointestinal disorders and cancer.
Eleanor Duse from HowStuffWorks explains that whey protein makes an excellent addition to the diet because it contains all nine amino acids found in whole proteins from animal sources, such as steak and chicken. People with dairy allergies can sometimes consume whey protein because the casein has been removed from the dairy source, which is what usually creates the gastrointestinal complications associated with lactose intolerance.
Whey protein is especially popular among fitness enthusiasts because it can be consumed easily in the form of a shake or snack bar, and whey protein is also absorbed into the body much faster than protein found in meat sources. This helps the protein reach the muscles quickly so that they are able to use the whey to repair themselves after a strenuous workout. Duse advises consuming approximately 0.08 grams of whey protein per 2.2 pounds of body weight, and this number is almost doubled for serious athletes.
