Ipecac syrup is no longer commercially available in the United States and cannot be purchased online. The last remaining manufacturers of ipecac syrup stopped production in 2010, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
For many years, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that people keep ipecac at home for use in the event of accidental poisonings, reports MedicineNet. However, this recommendation has since been reversed. Though ipecac syrup reliably causes vomiting in patients, researchers found that there was generally no improvement in poisoning symptoms even after inducing vomiting with ipecac syrup. Therefore, there is little reason to administer ipecac syrup due to its overall ineffectiveness in reversing the effects of accidental poisoning, according to Poison.org.
