Omeprazole may be taken in capsule, delayed-release capsule and tablet form. Capsules should be taken on an empty stomach; whole tablets may be taken with meals. People who have trouble swallowing may use omeprazole powder in liquid suspension, says Mayo Clinic.
Omeprazole decreases the production of stomach acid. It is not recommended for immediate treatment of heartburn symptoms, according to RxList. Omeprazole may be used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disorders and erosive esophagitis. The drug is often prescribed together with antibiotics to treat stomach ulcers caused by helicobacter pylori infection. Branded as Prilosec and Prilosec OTC, omeprazole is available in prescription and over-the-counter formulas.
