If a doctor’s practice uses an electronic medical records system that offers patient portals through which to exchange secure communications, it may be possible to obtain a doctor’s note online, explains Health IT. By June 2014, most U.S. hospitals and nearly half of all physicians utilized electronic records, reports WebMD.
The 2009 economic stimulus package incentivized medical providers to purchase computers and software to convert paper record-keeping to digital and electronic systems, reports WebMD. Individuals with access to provider patient portals can exchange secure emails with their health care teams, download and complete forms, schedule routine appointments and check insurance coverage, explains Health IT. Patients can also obtain discharge summaries, lab results, and view other personal health information such as medication and immunization records.
