Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, is a disease that causes abnormally high blood sugar levels, explains the American Diabetes Association. It occurs because the body becomes unable to use insulin correctly, a condition known as insulin resistance. The pancreas makes extra insulin to compensate at first, but it is unable to keep up with the demand over time. When this happens, the blood sugar rises too high, and the patient has diabetes.
Individuals can prevent or at least delay type 2 diabetes by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise, according to the American Diabetes Association. A healthy diet is essential for adults as well as children and includes choosing foods rich in nutrients and avoiding overeating. Many people eat more calories each day than they need, and many of these people could lower their diabetes risk by switching to a lower calorie, more nutritious diet.
