WebMD indicates that vitamin B12 is mainly used for the treatment and prevention of vitamin B12 deficiency, diseases resulting from vitamin B12 deficiency and pernicious anemia. Additionally, this vitamin is used to reduce the risk of hyperhomocysteinemia, a heart condition, and to prevent age-related macular degeneration when taken with vitamin B6 and folic acid.

WebMD explains that vitamin B12 is also used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss, heart disease, depression, weak bones, mental disorders, male infertility, sleep disorders, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, swollen tendons, asthma, vitiligo and allergies. Vitamin B12 can also boost energy, mood and concentration. Additionally, it helps regulate homocysteine levels, strengthen the immune system and slow down aging.

According to WebMD, this vitamin is also used to prevent skin infections, cervical cancer and other types of cancers. Moreover, vitamin B12 is sometimes used for multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, bleeding, liver problems, kidney diseases and ringing in the ears. It can also prevent gum diseases and Lyme disease, and it can protect the body from allergens and toxins that come from tobacco smoke. When applied to the skin either independently or with avocado oil, vitamin B12 can help treat eczema and psoriasis. Additionally, this vitamin is also essential to the proper development and functioning of the brain, blood cells, nerves and other body parts.

Vitamin B-12 converts different fats and proteins into energy, notes Live Well by Jillian Michaels. It also contains an important element called cobalt, which carries oxygen into the bloodstream.
