The vinegar diet results in weight loss by the ingestion of apple cider vinegar. As stated on WebMD, while results have been mixed about the effects of the vinegar diet, many still advocate it as a key to losing weight. Others have noted side effects and myths within the diet.
According to WebMD, the diet consists of a person ingesting a few teaspoons of vinegar before every meal. In turn, the vinegar is supposed to stave off a person’s appetite. However, studies have shown that the study participants’ weights did not drop, though their digestion of the meal may have been quicker.
WebMD also notes the side effects of vinegar, which can cause stomach and throat irritation and wear to teeth enamel. Apple cider vinegar should always be diluted before ingestion. Another apple cider vinegar side effect is the possibility that it can interact with medications.
Studies show that apple cider vinegar does not affect appetite. One group of mice in a study were fed a diet with vinegar and one group without. The group with apple cider vinegar had 10 percent less body fat, yet its appetites remained the same as those that had not been given the vinegar on a regular basis, reports WebMD.
