Bromelain is used to treat digestive problems, inflammation, tissue debridement and muscle relaxation. The chemicals in bromelain reduce blood clotting and interfere with tumor cell growth, notes WebMD.
Insufficient evidence is available for determining just how effective bromelain is for many of the conditions it is used for. When bromelain is combined with trypsin and rutin, it seems to be effective for osteoarthritis pain, reports WebMD. However, its effectiveness for reducing joint swelling for patients with rheumatoid arthritis is questionable. As of 2015, there is not enough scientific research to say with certainty that bromelain is effective for tissue debridement, inflammation, digestive issues or muscle relaxation.
