To use the USDA MyPlate program to teach nutrition, introduce the five food categories, including fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy. Depending on the age group, share printable icons and handouts, which are available at ChooseMyPlate.gov, as of 2015.
Display the MyPlate icon that illustrates the serving sizes and established colors, including red for fruits, green for vegetables, orange for grains, purple for proteins and blue for dairy. Help children explore the MyPlate coloring pages and activity sheets, and guide them in learning what foods and serving sizes go in each of the plate sections. Help them learn that at least half of each plate should contain fruits and vegetables.
