To use a cane for walking, put the cane on the strong side and move it along with the weak side of the body. This allows the weight of the body to be shifted more toward the stronger side, making it easier to walk with the cane.
Put the cane approximately 2 inches in front of the body or to the side of the body on the strong side. The cane and affected leg should move in sync, allowing each side to get an equal amount of body weight. To use a cane on stairs, move the good leg first, and then use the injured leg and cane at the same time. Continue alternating going up the stairs. If going down stairs, put the injured leg first, followed by the good leg and cane.
