Uric acid is a substance that is produced as a result of the body breaking down substances known as purines, according to the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus. Drinks and foods, such as beer, liver, peas, dried beans, mackerel and anchovies all contain purine. The majority of uric acid in the body is dissolved in the blood, passes to the kidneys and is then disposed in the urine.
If a persons body fails to properly expel uric acid or creates too much of it, they can end up with high amounts of uric acid in theblood or what is medically called hyperuricemia, according to MedlinePlus. In order to determine the amount of uric acid in the blood, a doctor must extract a blood sample from a vein on the back of the hand or on the inner elbow.
