Performing surgery on the upper eyelid, a procedure known as an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, can be done to address droopy eyelids, improve vision and give a person a more youthful appearance, notes Marilyn Haddrill of All About Vision. The surgery can be performed for medical and cosmetic purposes.
Upper eyelid surgery, also referred to as an eye lift, can be performed to improve a person's sight by getting rid of excess skin blocking his field of vision, says Haddrill. An upper eyelid blepharoplasty can also be performed to remove extra muscle and fat from the eyelids.
Upper eyelid ptosis surgery is a different procedure performed to tighten the tendons and muscles of the eyelid in order to lift the position of the lid, notes Haddrill. There are some situations where blepharoplasty can successfully raise the position of the eyes a bit if the extra eyelid skin is putting pressure on the lid of the eyes.
Eyelid surgeries are often carried out by ophthalmologists and oculoplastic surgeons, but the procedure can also be performed by a general plastic surgeon, a maxillofacial and oral surgeon, or an ear, nose and throat surgeon, says Haddrill. While deciding whether an individual is a good candidate for blepharoplasty, medical professionals often consider health complications, whether the individual smokes and the candidate's ethnic background.
