Sports that involve running, such as basketball and soccer, can increase the risk of stress fractures in the foot and ankle, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In addition, gymnastics, ballet and tennis can increase the risk of foot and ankle stress fractures.
A stress fracture is a small crack in the bone due to overuse, explains the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Muscles in the foot and ankle cannot properly absorb impact when fatigued, which leads to the foot and ankle bones bearing the force. Individuals with osteoporosis are at additional risk of stress fractures in the foot and ankle.
