The types of foods that are best for someone with diverticulitis are foods that are high in fiber, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, according to Mayo Clinic. It is important that these foods are accompanied by plenty of fluids or the fiber can cause constipation.
Diverticulitis is a condition that arises from the presence of diverticula, which are small pouches that form in the walls of the intestines, most commonly the lower part of the large intestine, explains Mayo Clinic. These pouches are normally benign, but they can rupture, resulting in diverticulitis. When this occurs, usually a change in diet, antibiotics and rest are enough to treat the condition. When diverticulitis occurs multiple times or the patient has a weakened immune system, surgery may be needed. Surgery is also needed if a complication such as bowel obstruction, fistula or perforation occurs.
Surgical treatment for diverticulitis requires either primary bowel resection or bowel resection with colostomy, according to Mayo Clinic. Primary bowel resection involves the removal of the inflamed section of the colon, after which the remaining sections are rejoined to allow normal bowel movements. If the inflammation is too great, the colon is instead redirected to an opening made in the abdomen, where it empties into a colostomy bag.
