Studies reveal that beer is associated with gout attacks, but gout sufferers may drink wine moderately as an alternative, states Everyday Health. Beef, pork, lamb and organ meats, such as kidneys and brains, are purine-rich foods that aggravate gout attacks. White-meat poultry and tofu are good substitutes for these high-purine foods.
Seafoods that contain higher purine contents than other fish include mackerel, herring, haddock, codfish and anchovies, notes Everyday Health. Scallops, trout, sardines and mussels should also be avoided. Suggested seafood for gout relief include salmon and limited amounts of lobster, crab, shrimp and oysters.
Reduce consumption of purine-rich vegetables, such as cauliflower, spinach, peas and asparagus, says Everyday Health. Nonetheless, vegetable sources are still preferable to animal-based foods. Foods with lots of fructose may trigger gout attacks, so eat fruits in moderation, and drink only water or real fruit juices. Choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products, and avoid whole milk and ice cream. Pair a healthy gout diet with a slow, steady weight loss regimen for an effective gout treatment.
