Phase one foods in the South Beach diet are divided into nine categories, including protein, nuts and seeds, dairy and cheese, sweet treats, fats and oils, and beverages.
Protein foods for this stage include beef, pork, chicken, and turkey. Examples of vegetables are artichokes, broccoli, eggplant, spinach. Nuts and seeds for this phase include peanuts and almonds. Examples of dairy products are milk, cheese and yogurt. Beans and legumes like chickpeas and lentils are included, as well as sweet treats such as gelatin and ice pops. Good fats and seasonings include canola oil, hot pepper, herbs and spices. Beverages like coffee, tea and seltzer water are also acceptable for phase one.
