As of 2015, at least eight stoma cap manufacturers sell their products on the Edgepark Medical Supplies website. The Ohio-based supplier offers nearly 40,000 products to patients suffering from a variety of chronic health conditions.
Stoma caps sold by Edgepark come in boxes of 15 to 30 products each and range in size from 1/2 inch to 4 1/2 inches wide. Depending on the needs of the patient, stoma caps may be porous, square, contoured, round or filtered. Stoma caps may be center cut, or have off-center openings; most are latex-free to prevent allergic reactions in patients. Manufacturers with the largest selection of stoma caps for purchase through Edgepark Medical Supplies include Secure Health Products, Hollister Inc. and Coloplast Inc.
A stoma refers to an opening in the abdomen through which the body excretes waste, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Affixed to the caps are pouches, which collect this waste material and must be emptied several times daily. Doctors may create a stoma if someone has an ileostomy, or other operation where part of the intestines are brought through an opening of the abdomen.
Capping the stoma temporarily eliminates the need for the attached pouch, convenient when patients wish to remain discreet or physically active, notes the Colostomy Association.
