The continuous glucose monitoring device is a diabetes meter that does not require any blood, according to Dexcom. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the device, which produces hundreds of glucose readings 24 hours a day, enabling diabetics to track their glucose level fluctuations in real time.
Patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes can use the device. It does not make blood glucose meter readings totally unnecessary, but offers a way to control glucose levels more effectively, explains Dexcom. The device includes a miniature sensor that measures glucose levels subcutaneously, a wireless transmitter that sends the data, and a small receiver that displays the results in color graphics. As of 2015, patients can also view their results on an iPhone or Apple Watch.
