Different types of back braces are prescribed to help reduce the pain from a herniated disc depending upon the severity of the condition. These include a corset, back belt or brace, states Spine Universe.
Doctors occasionally direct a patient with a herniated disc to wear a lumbar corset, which is a soft, flexible back brace, for a short period of time. The brace is used to relieve the pain, but does not help heal the disc, explains KnowYourBack.org. In most cases, doctors advise patients using a back belt or brace to discontinue use over a two- to four-day period, as using the brace can cause trunk muscles to rely on the belt. This can cause the muscles to shrink, states Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
