An individual who takes blood thinners should not use turmeric supplements without a doctor's permission, according to WebMD. It may not be safe due to potential decreasing of blood clotting, states MedlinePlus. Therefore, physicians sometimes recommend that patients on anticoagulants, such as aspirin, warfarin or heparin, avoid the spice.
Research has not shown that turmeric is consistently an effective treatment for any medical condition, MedlinePlus explains. However, it is possible that oral doses of turmeric lessen an upset stomach. In some cases, pain from osteoarthritis seems reduced by the use of turmeric. Further research is required on the use of turmeric for these and other diseases, including Alzheimer's, colorectal cancer, diabetes, HIV and scabies, states WebMD.
