Turmeric pills are pills that contain the powdered root of the turmeric plant. Drugs.com notes that turmeric is a member of the ginger family, traditionally used as a spice, which is undergoing clinic trials for the treatment of intestinal cancers, Huntington disease and Alzheimer's.
MedlinePlus reports that turmeric most likely works by decreasing inflammation. It goes on to mention that it is possibly effective in the treatment of upset stomach and osteoarthritis. There is not enough evidence to support turmeric as a treatment for pain, fibromyalgia, jaundice, hepatitis, skin cancer and other diseases. Both MedlinePlus and Drugs.com list the recommended dosage of turmeric as 500 milligrams four times a day to treat upset stomach and 500 milligrams two times a day to treat osteoarthritis.
