To treat a bruise, or hematoma, elevate and apply ice and compression to the bruised area, explains WebMD. Gentle massage and over-the-counter pain medicine, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, can reduce pain symptoms.
Apply ice or cold packs to the bruise at least three times a day for 10 to 20 minutes to reduce pain and swelling, according to WebMD. Gently wrap the injury with an elastic bandage, and loosen it if you experience numbness, coolness, tingling, or additional pain and swelling.
Avoid smoke and tobacco products, which can slow healing and reduce blood supply, states WebMD. For the first 48 hours, also avoid irritants such as hot water showers and alcohol, which can increase swelling. Apply heat after 48 to 72 hours to restore flexibility.
