Elevation may also help reduce swelling and inflammation that can cause pain, especially when used with ice. Experts recommended elevating the arm and hand while icing and when lying down or sitting to reduce pain. Positioning the arm and hand above the level of the heart is considered elevation.
Compression is also recommended to reduce pain in the arms and hands, according to WebMD. Wrapping the arm and hand with an elastic bandage, for example, may help to reduce swelling. It is important that the bandage is not too tight. If relief is not experienced within 48 to 72 hours of compression, the person should contact a doctor.
