What Is a Treatment for Otitis Media?

Application of heat to the ear, administration of over-the-counter analgesics and administration of prescription ear drops are some treatments for otitis media, also known as middle ear infection, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most ear infections clear up without antibiotic treatment.

Placing a warm, damp cloth on the affected ear may help to relieve pain, states the Mayo Clinic. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen can also alleviate pain as long as they are taken as the labels direct. If the ear drum is intact, a doctor may prescribe ear drops as another pain-relief measure. Doctors may prescribe antibiotics depending on the age of the patient, the severity and duration of the pain, and the presence of a fever.
