As most neck pain is caused by tension or posture issues, relaxation techniques are an effective reduction method. Yoga, Pilates and stretching are commonly prescribed by medical professionals, according to the NHS. Additionally, weightlifting improves the strength of surrounding muscles, reducing the tension on the neck.
Medication is another common pain reduction method. The NHS recommends starting with simple, over-the-counter medicines such as paracetamol. Stronger medications, such as codeine, are prescribed for short-term, intense pain.
Tension problems arise for a variety of reasons, states the NHS. The three most common causes are stress, anxiety and issues with posture. Additional problems include lack of proper hydration, poor sleeping patterns, inappropriate diet, lack of exercise, and even specific smells and sounds. In rare cases, poor lighting or bright sunlight also cause tension headaches or neck pain.
The majority of tension issues do not require medical attention, says the NHS. However, if the pain begins during pregnancy, is accompanied by fever or nausea, or begins after any type of collision, medical assistance is essential.
