Treatment options for degenerative eye disease include the intake of nutritional supplements, drug injections, photodynamic therapy and laser surgery, says National Eye Institute. These treatment options do not actually cure the eye disease. They can only slow down its progress and avoid severe vision loss.
The applicable treatment option for a patient depends on the stage of his degenerative eye disease, states National Eye Institute. Patients in the early stage of the disease, which often shows no symptoms, rarely get any treatment. For those who are diagnosed with macular degeneration, doctors recommend the intake of supplements with vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, beta-carotene, lutein, or zeaxanthin. For advanced cases, patients undergo laser surgery or photodynamic therapy to stop immediate vision loss.
