Nail fungus can usually be treated at home with an anti-fungal nail cream or ointment, reports the Mayo Clinic. Applying Vicks VapoRub to the nail is another recommended treatment for the condition. Patients should wash, trim and thin the nails before attempting treatment of the affected areas.
If the fungus does not go away with an at-home treatment, a doctor can prescribe an oral antifungal drug or a medicated nail polish. Other patients might benefit from laser therapy, according to the Mayo Clinic. In extreme cases, some patients might need to have the affected nail removed surgically. Unfortunately, a new nail can take up to a year to grow back fully.
