Individuals who undergo laparoscopic repair for an abdominal hernia usually recover quicker and experience less discomfort when compared to patients who have had an open hernia repair operation, according to Mayo Clinic. Open hernia repair and laparoscopy are the two types of abdominal hernia treatment operations.
Laparoscopy is a less invasive procedure than an open hernia repair, explains Mayo Clinic. The surgeon operates on the hernia through small abdominal incisions. A thin tube with a camera, which provides visual guidance for the surgeon, is inserted into the abdomen through the small incisions. The surgeon uses synthetic mesh to repair the hernia.
